Tuscany: The Island of Elba 34

Walking on the Island of Elba

Take a relaxing walking holiday on the Island of Elba, a green oasis within the Tuscan Archipelago, famous for harbouring the French Emperor Napoleon in 1814 during his 10-month exile following the Treaty of Fontainebleau. You walk through picturesque fishing villages and along rugged coastlines. Elba is coveted for its crystal clear blue waters and white sandy beaches, the richness of the landscapes, making it the perfect destination for a walking holiday.

Day 1: Arrive Marciana Marina

From the airport (Florence and Pisa being the closest) go to the nearest train station and take the train to Piombino. At the port, a private transfer will take you to your accommodation in Marciana Marina.

Day 2: A Choice of Marciana Marina Walks | 10-15 km

Today you can choose between 2 scenic walks. After breakfast, take the local bus to Marciana, where both walks start. In the afternoon, take the local bus back to Marciana Marina.

Option 2: Marciana & Madonna del Monte Sanctuary (15 km): Start climbing on the Monte Capanne ridge to the viewpoint of La Tavola, from where you have great open views of the eastern side of the island and the islands of Pianosa, Montecristo and Capraia. Breakfast is included every day, and dinner on Day 3, served at a nearby restaurant. Packed lunches can be pre-ordered at the accommodations or you can buy food from the village shops. Throughout the trip, there are plenty of opportunities to taste both the great local food and wines.

Difficulty & terrain

The route is graded easy to moderate; you can optionally take a longer or a shorter walk on most days. The whole itinerary is mostly on paths and gravel roads. A good level of fitness is required for enjoying the walks to the maximum (read more about difficulty grades). We strongly advise you to follow only marked trails and never try to shorten the path through the unknown and unmarked terrain. We will provide you with detailed road notes and maps, and you can call our 24/7 local assistance phone number anytime. More detailed info on route navigation will be included in your holiday information pack.

When to go

You can start your holiday every day between 14 April and 25 October. The climate of Elba Island is Mediterranean, with mild, relatively rainy winters and warm to hot, sunny summers. The best time to visit the island is the summer, from June to August, with a preference for July and August, because the sea in June is still a bit cool. Generally, the temperatures are not too high, there are rare rains, and the breeze blows; however, there can be hot and muggy periods.

By plane

Our recommended arrival and departure airports for this holiday are Florence and Pisa.

By train or bus
  • From Pisa airport, take the city bus (Red Line) to Pisa Centrale train station. Here take the train to Piombino Marittima. A few trains are direct; otherwise, you change train at Campiglia Marittima.
  • From Florence airport, take the direct local bus to Santa Maria Novella train station to take a train to Piombino Marittima. There are no direct trains, so you always need to change in Pisa Centrale and sometimes also in Campiglia Marittima.

To reach the port, be sure to get off in Piombino Marittima as in Piombino there are two train stations: one in the city centre and the other at the port. In Piombino Marittima, there are many ferry/boat companies to choose from to reach Portoferraio. The main companies are Toremar, Blu Navy and Moby Lines.
