Overview
An eight day, self-guided walking holiday along the Sörmland Trail, a wilderness area accessible just an hour from Stockholm. Also known as the Sörmland Way (Sörmlandsleden), this is a carefully crafted itinerary through a mostly uninhabited region, left to rewild and restore those who walk there. This holiday takes you to some of the 1000km trail’s most idyllic locations, to swim in lakes, forest bathe or island hop to Stendörren Nature Reserve. After a day in Stockholm, staying in a 4-star hotel, overnight in traditional Swedish guesthouses along the trail, with luggage transferred for you.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Stockholm
Arrive in Stockholm and enjoy some free time to explore this picturesque city, often referred to as Venice of the North, due to its location on 14 islands. Stroll through the Söder neighbourhood and 13th-century Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s charming Old Town. For those of you keen to start hiking, we can offer you an optional self-guided hiking tour through Stockholm’s unique Ekopark – the world’s first national park to be located within a bustling city, a 27km2 green oasis.

Day 2: Tullgarn Palace to Trosa | 15-20km
Transfer (1h) to Sörmland and the impressive Tullgarn Palace, an 18th-century royal palace located on the waterfront, with magnificent views of the Baltic Sea. Guided tours are available (not included) and there is a lovely café/restaurant. After the visit, start your hike southwards, enjoying the coastal scenery. The hike follows the Sörmlandsleden Path, which winds its way for over 1000km through Sörmland. You pass by wonderful viewpoints and Kömote beach, where you can take a quick swim before you continue your journey to the seaside town of Trosa. Trosa is a charming 17th-century town otherwise known as World’s End, because of its location on the banks of the Baltic Sea with panoramic views of the ocean. Note: there is also an option to shorten this hike.

Day 3: Stendörren and Sävö Island | 14-18km
This morning, a transfer (30mins) is arranged for you from Trosa to Stendörren nature reserve, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful archipelagos in Sweden. Here you have the rest of the morning to hike across its many islands using their system of suspension bridges. Head to the viewpoint and Naturum Information Centre, or swim in the refreshing Baltic waters. You then take a boat from Stendörren to Sävö Island Nature Reserve (boats sail every 15mins). Here you pick up the Sörmlandsleden Trail, which leads you around the island. After your island hike, take the boat to Mättinge, where you once again pick up the Sörmlandsleden Trail and follow it to the 17th-century Nynäs Manor House via Sandvik beach. At the end of this day of walking, there is a transfer from Nynäs back to Trosa.

Day 4: Trosa Rest Day / Nyköping | 8km
Today you have a free day in Trosa to visit the village, harbour, church and museum. If you feel like stretching your legs, then there is a short walk available through the village and along the river. You then take the bus from Trosa to Nyköping, a historic city with a vibrant harbour. This afternoon, take the walkway along the River Nyköping from the harbour through the town centre to open countryside. Highlights along the way include Nyköpingshus Castle, Hållet Nature Reserve, Slabro rock carvings some fascinating bridges. After crossing the open countryside, your walk ends at Oppeby, from where you take the bus back to Nyköping. This evening take a stroll down through the busy harbour and enjoy its vibrant atmosphere.

Day 5: Nyköping to Nävekvarn | 17.5km
A transfer in the morning takes you through the Kiladalen region to Lake Nävsjön. When you walk through the Nävsjön Nature Reserve the pines surrounding you are more than 250 years old, with many 350 years old. Your hike starts with an 8km loop around the lake, hugging the shores and offering plenty of places and enjoy the waterfront views. After completing the loop, continue along the Sörmlandsleden Trail towards Nävekvarn. The trail now takes you through a tranquil forest as you make your way towards the shore of Bråviken Bay. Following the shore, start your ascent to Nävekvarn Klint hilltop, with far-stretching views across Bråviken. Take your time before descending to the seaside town of Nävekvarn, also rich in mining history. Nävekvarn is a true hiker’s paradise thanks to the many Sörmlandsleden trails that start and end here in the little village.

Day 6: Nävekvarn loop walk | 14km
Take the bus from Nävekvarn to Buskhyttan, from where you then walk about 4km to Koppartorp. Once at Koppartorp, there is a selection of loop walks to fill your day. One loop takes you around the foot of Kummelberget, another loop takes you through a former mining district, and the third loop takes you up Simonberget where you can enjoy fantastic views across the countryside. Once back down from the heights of Simonberget, wander over to Koppartorp, a district rich in culture and history where you can visit the local folklore museum, church dating back to 1620 and a mining museum from the 14th century. It’s a short walk back to Buskhyttan where you take the bus back to Nävekvarn for an afternoon exploring the little island Skäret, on Nävekvarn’s doorstep.

Day 7: Nävekvarn to Nyköping | 18km
Your hike starts directly from Nävekvarn following the spectacular Bråviken coast, enjoying coastal scenery from both the water’s edge and from hilltops along the way. This is a beautiful stretch of coastline of which the Sörmlandsleden Trail takes maximum advantage. Take a break from the trails and enjoy the handful of beaches that you pass along the way. A transfer meets you at the end of the day’s hike and takes you back to the busy harbour at Nyköping.

Day 8: Departure
After breakfast, it is time for your holiday walking the Sörmland Trail to come to an end. If you have extra time today, then you can follow the Sörmlandsleden heading southwards towards Lindbacke-Svanbacke Nature Reserve and Ryssberget Nature Reserve, both with great views over Kiladalen.

Accommodation on this tour includes a mix of small, locally-owned hotels, B&Bs and traditional guesthouses. They have been carefully selected based on a variety of criteria including their location, warm hospitality, fine local food or commitment to responsible tourism. Day 1 – Stockholm: Rex Hotel, Hellstens Malmgård Hotel, Hellsten, Hellsten Glashus
Hellsten is a 4-star hotel with a difference in the centre of Stockholm, in the Södermalm district. Close to everything with quiet and intriguing rooms. Every room has its own design and colour scheme.
Rex is a 3-star hotel located right in the city centre. This special boutique hotel offers a very homely feeling. The owner’s artistic and international background is reflected in the design of the hotel, its vision and photography collection.
Hellstens Malmgård is a newly renovated 3-star hotel in a historic building in Stockholm’s southern district Södermalm. Boutique hotel with quiet rooms, all uniquely decorated.
Hellstens Glashus is in Stockholm’s vibrant southern district Södermalm. Located close to Mariatorget, within a 10mins walk of the Old Town.
Days 2 and 3 – Trosa: Tre Små Rum B&B – located on one of Trosa’s prettiest streets between the harbour and town square. Parts of the building date from the 18th century. All rooms are recently and charmingly refurbished. Swimming pool for guests. Shared facilities between 2-3 rooms. Upgrade to rooms with private facilities available on request.
Days 4 and 7 – Nyköping: Clarion Collection Hotel Kompaniet – located right next to the beautiful River Nyköping. Its outdoor terrace is known to be one of the best places to enjoy an alfresco drink in Nyköping and is just a short walk from the city’s vibrant harbour. Relax area with a jacuzzi and sauna available at the hotel. Upgrade to a superior room at a supplement is possible on request.
Days 5 and 6 – Nävekvarn: Marinans Guesthouse – located a stone’s throw from Nävekvarn’s lively harbour, it’s a wonderful restoration of the former Nävekvarn Works. Large kitchen and lounge area available to all guests. Rooms have shared facilities and upgrades to rooms with facilities are available on request.

Meals
Breakfast is included on all days, as well as two picnic lunches and three dinners. Please note that for dinner in Nävekvarn on day 5, the hosts at the guesthouse provide all ingredients, which you can then grill on a provided grill. It is often fish (pike-perch) and seasonal vegetables. When no restaurant location is available on the route, lunches and snacks should either be bought from local shops or packed lunches can be pre-ordered from your hotel the night before. You can have dinner at the hotel you are staying at or at the village restaurants.
Difficulty and terrain
The grade is easy to moderate with some moderate sections, and the longest day is 20km (can be shortened). The walking is not challenging (3-5 hours per day), but it is an undulating landscape with many hills, and some stretches may be a bit boggy if it has rained recently (read more about difficulty grades). The trail follows well-maintained footpaths, and the trails are waymarked. Children older than 12 years can participate in the tour. Comprehensive route notes and maps are supplied. When to go
This trip is available to start from end June to early August, on Mondays and selected Saturdays only. For larger groups, we can arrange departures on other days of the week. If you are a seasoned and well-equipped hiker, we can book you on off-season dates.

The closest airports are Stockholm Arlanda and Skavsta, 100km south of Stockholm.
By train or bus
- The Arlanda Express train takes you from Arlanda Airport to the city centre in 20mins.
- Flygbussarna Airport Coaches run buses from Skavsta Airport to the centre of Stockholm, which takes about 80mins.
