Overview
A seven day, self-guided walking holiday through the Sierra de Francia in southern Salamanca, a mountain region that incorporates Las Batuecas–Sierra de Francia Natural Park, which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The region is also celebrated for its cultural and architectural heritage, particularly in six of its villages, which are official Historical Sites, thanks to their well-preserved traditional stone-and-timber buildings. All of which feature on this hiking holiday. The most famous are La Alberca, where you spend the first two nights of the holiday, and Mogarraz where you spend the second and third nights. The whole adventure is peppered with these medieval marvels, linked by spectacular hikes to the likes of Peña de Francia (1,727m), Las Batuecas Valley and the Camino del Agua.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in La Alberca
Arrive in La Alberca, a medieval village of stone and timber at 1,000m, declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1940 and one of the best-preserved in Spain. Take time to walk the narrow lanes of the Old Quarter, visit the main square and its 18th-century church, and get a sense of the Sierra region. There are several good restaurants where you can taste traditional calderillo bejarano (beef stew) and hornazos (meat pie), and a handful of shops selling the region’s well-known Guijuelo ham, cheese and wines.
- Accommodation: Hotel Antiguas Eras or similar in La Alberca
- Optional hotel upgrade: Abadía de los Templarios or similar in La Alberca
Day 2: Peña de Francia | 20.1km
Hike from La Alberca to the summit of Peña de Francia, the highest point in the Sierra at 1,727m. The route follows the main ridge towards Valle Hondo, taking you past small rural shrines and traditional stone structures before the final walk up to the summit, where a Dominican monastery has stood since the 15th century. On clear days, the views extend across Las Batuecas–Sierra de Francia Natural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. After taking in the views, walk down via forested paths back to La Alberca.
- Walking for the day: 20.1km, ↑810m ↓810m
- Accommodation: Hotel Antiguas Eras or similar in La Alberca
- Optional hotel upgrade: Abadía de los Templarios or similar in La Alberca
Day 3: La Alberca – Mogarraz | 10.5km
Walk down south from La Alberca through oak and chestnut woodland along Quilama Valley to Mogarraz River, a small village also recognised as an official a National Historic-Artistic Monument. The town is renowned for a remarkable project: some 400 portrait photographs of former residents, painted by local artist Florencio Maíllo, covering the facades of the stone houses. Before settling in for the night, we recommend taking time walking the village streets and also visit Serrano Embroidery Interpretation Centre to learn more about this aspect of their cultural heritage.
- Walking for the day: 10.5km, ↑110m ↓410m
- Accommodation: Villa de Mogarraz Hotel Spa or similar in Mogarraz
Day 4: Mogarraz circular via Camino del Agua | 16km
Head west to start a loop from Mogarraz along the Camino del Agua, crossing Arroyo de los Milanos stream before walking up through woodland to Monforte de la Sierra. From here the route continues to Mirador de Las Batuecas, with open views down into the protected valley. Continue on to the villages of Madroñal and Cepeda where you can taste local cured meats and cheeses. The return follows an old trail back towards Mogarraz, crossing Arroyo de los Milanos stream again via Puente del Pontón, a two-arched stone bridge built by the Romans.
- Walking for the day: 16km, ↑480m ↓480m
- Accommodation: Villa de Mogarraz Hotel Spa or similar in Mogarraz
Day 5: Mogarraz – Miranda del Castañar | 19.8km
Set off from Mogarraz, cross the Francia River to join the Bosque de los Espejos trail, a forest path where sculptures and installations blend into the woodland. Continue to San Martín de Castañar, a village with a medieval castle, a 16th-century church and a small bullring are cut directly into the rock. Pick up the Bosque de los Espejos trail again on the way out and walk through Sequeros and Villanueva del Conde before dropping down to Miranda del Castañar. This is a walled medieval town with intact fortifications, cobbled streets and a castle, and a fascinating place to spend the night.
- Walking for the day: 19.8km, ↑690m ↓810m
- Accommodation: Posada Miranda or similar in Miranda del Castañar
Day 6: Camino de los Rodales | 15.9km
Start the day with a walk around Miranda del Castañar before heading out on the trail. The town has over 600m of intact medieval walls with four original gates, a 14th-century castle and a main square, all worth taking in at a slower pace. Head south and follow the Camino de los Rodales, walking through vineyards with views across the Sierra. Continue on down to the ruins of Puente Coca, an old crossing over the Francia River now reduced to stonework in the riverbank. We recommend pausing here before returning back to Miranda for a well deserved local dinner.
- Walking for the day: 15.9km, ↑360m ↓360m
- Accommodation: Posada Miranda or similar in Miranda del Castañar
Day 7: Departure

When to go
This trip is available from March to October.
The flexibility of self-guided holidays means that there are no fixed dates and you can start your trip on any date within the season. The Sierra de Francia region enjoys a continental Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild spring and autumn conditions. During the winter months temperatures can drop significantly and occasional snow or ice can be found.
Spring (Mar–May) and autumn (September–October) typically see temperatures ranging from 08–22C, with fresh mornings, pleasant daytime conditions and occasional rain showers. These seasons are particularly good for walking, with green landscapes in spring and rich autumn colours later in the year.
Summer temperatures generally range between 25–35C, with strong sunshine and very little rainfall. During this period, it is advisable to start walks early in the morning and allow time for rest during the hottest part of the day.
