Overview
Finisterre translates as ‘the end of the world’, and the Camino Finisterre, between Santiago and Cape Finisterre, is the last lap for many pilgrims to push themselves into nature as far as they possibly can go. The full name is the Camino Finisterre-Muxía or Fisterra in Galician, and it’s an official part of the Camino de Santiago, still marked by the iconic golden scallop shell (or vieira). This six day, self-guided tour takes you as far as Finisterre, one of Spain’s westernmost points, on a 90km journey through forests, wild seascapes and gorgeous Galician landscapes. A perfect addition to any Camino de Santiago walking holiday. With luggage transfers.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Santiago de Compostela
If you arrive early, we recommend taking time to explore the city and its iconic cathedral, or book an extra night before the holiday.

Day 2: Santiago – Negreira | 21km
Leaving Santiago behind, head through Lost Pilgrims’ Gateway, downhill through eucalyptus and pine forests to the Sar River. Continue on past Figueiras, then Villestro, Roxos and Alto do Vento. Once in Augapesada, climb up to the top of Mar de Ovellas, and take in the views of Amaía Valley. Next, walk through Carballo, Trasmonte, Reino and Burgueiros. When you get to the Tambre River cross over Ponte Maceira bridge. Finally, take the wooded footpath next to the river up to Chancela to reach Negreira.

Day 3: Negreira – Olveiroa | 34km or 23km
There are two options for today: the shorter route (23km) involves a taxi transfer to Vilaseiro (payable locally) to then join the walk to Olveiroa. Alternatively, the longer walk of 34km starts from Negreira, where you cross the Barcala River and continue alongside cornfields, pine and eucalyptus-lined trails for the first few kilometres. You will also walk past some traditional Galician architecture, such as the As Maroñas granaries and the Romanesque church of Santa Mariña. Leave Santa Mariña and follow the route to Mount Aro (556m). From here, continue on to Campo Valado, Porteliñas, Abeleiroas and the Corzón viewpoint. Finally end the day heading through A Ponte Olveira to the centre of Olveiroa.

Day 4: Olveiroa – Cee | 19km
From Olveiroa, the camino follows the Xallas and Hospital Rivers to Logoso before taking you past Nosa Señora Chapel. After the chapel, the trail continues downhill through the pine groves of Alto do Cruceiro da Armada. Today’s walk is less hilly and a beautiful one, winding between mountains, windmills and forests. Reach the peak of San Pedro before descending to the village of Cee with its sandy cove and colourful fishing boats.

Day 5: Cee – Finisterre | 16km
Shortly after leaving Cee, you come to Corcubión, with a fine Old Quarter to stroll around. From Corcubión, tackle the steep hill that leads to Campo de San Roque and the village of Vilar. Follow the coastline and Langosteira beach to arrive at Finisterre. End the day on the tip of Cape Finisterre, famous for its magnificent lighthouse and being one of the westernmost points of Spain.

Accommodation
Accommodation on this tour includes a mix of small, locally-owned hotels, B&Bs and traditional guesthouses. They have been carefully selected based on a variety of criteria including their proximity to the camino, warm hospitality, fine local food or commitment to responsible tourism. All rooms have en-suite or private bathrooms.
Important: We aim to book you into each town listed on the itinerary. However, in the event of low availability, we may book you two nights in the same town with provided transfers. Also, on some occasions, your accommodation can be located a few kilometres away from the trail, so we organise transportation to/from your accommodation.

Meals
Breakfast is included (usually buffet breakfast/coffee and toast/bread/croissant) on all days. When no restaurant location is available on the route, lunches and snacks should either be bought from local shops, or packed lunch can be pre-ordered from your hotel the night before. Most places serve hearty and reasonably priced pilgrim dinner menus.
Difficulty and terrain
This walk is graded moderate with daily distances of up to 24km per day; there is one longer 34km walk on day three which can be shortened with an optional transfer (read more about difficulty grades). The routes are very well way-marked, and the itinerary is straightforward to follow. We strongly advise you to follow only marked trails and never try to shorten the path through the unknown and unmarked terrain. When to go
This trip is available all year round. The best months to visit are April – June and September – October as in summer months it may become too hot (and crowded).

By train or bus
Arrival in Santiago de Compostela:
- There is a shuttle bus from the airport of Santiago to the centre of Santiago with different stops in the city.
- Santiago de Compostela is very well connected by train to many destinations in Spain. For more details, see the national rail operator Renfe or use the Omio planner above
Departure from Finisterre:
- There are several buses a day that run from Finisterre (Fisterra) back to Santiago (3h) where you can pick up your onward travel. Check the Monbus website for up-to-date schedules.

Please note: in December 2024, the Spanish government introduced a new law making it a legal obligation for all visitors to Spain to share personal details with their accommodations and car rental companies. Consequently, as we book your accommodation for you, we are obliged to pass these on to our local partners on the ground. After booking your holiday, we will send you a form to complete requesting all the legally-required information, including: name, nationality, gender, passport number, DOB, address, phone numbers and email address.
