This centre-based walking holiday will bring you to an undiscovered part of Slovenia, taking in the beautiful valley of the turquoise Soča (Isonzo) river. Fine food and wine are supplemented with breath-taking scenery, vast karst landscapes, and views to the Julian Alps and Triglav Nature Park’s stunning peaks. The easy to moderate walking itinerary is suitable for walkers of average fitness level and families with children.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Bovec
Arrival in Soča Valley’s ‘capital’, the town of Bovec, where you will spend the next 7 nights, offers plenty for hikers and outdoor lovers. With the Julian Alps above, the Soča river valley below and Triglav National Park all around, you will spend a week walking in the unspoilt nature without ever doing the same walk or activity twice. Welcome meeting with our representative.

Day 2: Moznica Canyon and Kluze Fortress | 10km
A morning car transfer brings you to the starting point of your walk – the entrance to the Moznica river canyon. The landscape and surrounding mountains you will walk through were once a background to many WW1 battles. Stop to visit Kluze Fortress. Built more than a century ago to block access to Southern Austria, it has survived all subsequent wars and is now an impressive anti-war museum. The trail passes by the remains of many once-mighty fortifications.

Day 3: Virje Waterfall | 11km
Walkthrough mountain meadows and on forested trails to the spring of Gljun, Depending on the weather and the season, its waters tumble down a 30-foot waterfall before entering the Soca River. The return to Bovec takes you through lush meadows, whose backdrop is dominated by Mt. Svinjak.

Day 4: Lepena and Trenta Valleys to Bovec | 15km
After a short car transfer, the day’s walk takes you to the turquoise coloured River Soca (Isonzo). Follow the trail along the river, explore the limestone canyon and freshen up in the shallow ponds.

Day 5: Mount Kanin to Bovec | 7km
Take a cable car ride up to Mt. Kanin (buy a ticket on-site, not included). The cable car’s upper station at 970m has a wonderful viewpoint of Bovec area, the surrounding Slovene and Italian mountain ranges and the valley of river Soča. The day’s walk crosses mountain pastures covered with wildflowers and an occasional sheep farm.

Day 6: Boka Waterfall | 15km
Short car transfer to Srpenica. From this quaint little village, crossing the 63m-long hanging Bridge of Lovers, you will walk along the right bank of river Soča back to Bovec. The river bend is also the best spot to see the huge Boka waterfall. The waterfall is fed by waters from underground caves of the Kanin range and can at best water levels reach the height of 100m. Take lunch in one of the popular local pubs in Čezsoča and head back to Bovec.

Day 7: Rest Day / Optional Activities
Relax or try whitewater kayaking, rafting, canyoning, paragliding, zip-lining (not included, bookable on site).

Difficulty and terrain
This tour is appropriate for walkers of average fitness and families (read more about difficulty grades). You will walk on hiking trails with sometimes rocky terrain. We strongly advise you to follow only marked trails and never shorten the path through the unknown and unmarked terrain. We will provide you with detailed road notes and maps, and you can call our 24/7 local assistance phone number anytime. More detailed info on route navigation will be included in your holiday information pack.
When to go
This trip is available between 18 April and 28 September. The flexibility of self-guided holidays means that there are no fixed dates and you can start your holiday on any date in the season – so please indicate desired starting date when booking.
Summers in the valley are pleasantly warm with an average temperature of about 19C but there are many days when daily temperatures rise up to 30C. All the same, the heat is never a problem because you can freshen up in the Soča and other rivers in the area.
Last-minute bookings with departure within 21 days available upon request. A supplement of 10% of the tour price will be applicable.
