Next, you do a more challenging section: first on dirt tracks out to the ocean, then on a lovely path along the coast. The route is mainly flat along the levada, still, you gain altitude gradually (path later protected by a handrail), allowing for majestic views of the coast and the laurel forest covering Madeira’s canyons and hills. Once in Portela, you can either take a taxi (not included) or continue on a cobbled (at times, slippery) path to Porto da Cruz. A pre-booked taxi will take you to Santana after the walk.

Difficulty and terrain
This holiday is appropriate for seasoned walkers and requires a good level of fitness; the average walking time is 5-6h per day. The daily routes run along well-built and very diverse paths, which can be quite narrow. Many paths run along the exposed coastal cliff edges and levadas (irrigation canals), where a head for heights and firm-footing are essential in some sections (read more about difficulty grades). The routes are on waymarked paths and trails, and you will also be provided with all the information and GPS tracks necessary to navigate you. We strongly advise you to follow only marked trails and never shorten the path through the unknown and unmarked terrain. You can also call our 24/7 local assistance phone number anytime if you need assistance. More detailed info on route navigation will be included in your holiday information pack.
When to go
This trip is available during the whole year. The flexibility of self guided holidays means that there are no fixed dates, and you can start your trip on any date. Due to its mountainous topography, the island has diverse microclimates. The difference in altitude makes it possible in winter to find snow on the top of the mountains, as in Pico do Areeiro, but sunny weather and 23C at sea level or below the ‘banana line’. The bay of Funchal, protected by the highest peaks, enjoys the most sunshine. Further down the south-west coast, at Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, Madalena do Mar, Calheta, Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar, backed by the lower hills of Paul da Serra, the sun shines brighter during the summer months, and it is sunny and pleasant throughout the winter.
