Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Hochpustertal
Individual arrival at the hotel in Alta Hochpustertal (Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco). Free, unguarded public car park near the hotel.
- Overnight in Dobbiaco/Toblach or Villabassa/Niederdorf
Day 2: Villabassa/Dobbiaco – Pragser Tal/Valle di Braies – Plätzwiese
Your Dolomites walking holiday starts by the idyllic lake Pragser Wildsee, which will fascinate you with its crystal clear turquoise waters. Here you get a first impression of the Pragser Tal; with its dark-needled coniferous forests and the whitewashed walls of the mountain rocks, it counts as one of the Dolomites’ pearls. The way leads you to the alpine pasture Rossalm and then to Plätzwiese. Beside calm and nature, you encounter here also a panoramic view: In the vastness, you can see Cristallo, Tofana and the world-famous Drei Zinnen (Three Peaks). Leisurely walkers can choose an alternative option for the first stage, at which they are taken to the guesthouse Tuscherhof and start their walk from there. Following the river Stolla, they pass the guesthouse Brückele and Stolla hut to get to the Plätzwiese.
- Walking for the day (Option 1): approx.4-5h, ↑ 790m
- Walking for the day (Option 2): approx. 6-7h, ↑ 1,100m ↓580m
- Overnight in Prags
Day 3: Plätzwiese – Strudelkopf or Dürrenstein
The starting point of today’s stage of your Dolomites walking holiday is the alpine pasture Plätzwiese, which, together with the mountains Hohe Gaisl and Kreuzkofelgruppe, counts as the most treasured and revered hiking areas in the country. In the Nature Park Fanes-Sennes-Prags, the largest nature park in the Dolomites, you can make your choice between two options. Starting at the Plätzwiese, depending on the route you choose, you reach either the Strudelkopf (shorter option) or the Dürrenstein (longer variant). Both options offer you a spectacular view of the Hohe Gaisl, the Drei Zinnen (Three Peaks), the Tofana and the Monte Cristallo peak.
- Walking for the day (Option 1-Strudelkopf): approx. 3-4h, ↑ 360m ↓360m
- Walking for the day (Option 2-Dürrenstein): approx.4-5h, ↑ 850m ↓850m
- Overnight in Prags
Day 4: Plätzwiese – Knappenfußtal – Gemärk/Cimabanche – Cortina d’Ampezzo
You hike through the high plateau of the Plätzwiese and descend through the Knappenfußtal to Cimabanche – the frontier between South Tyrol and Belluno. Here there are two possibilities to continue: either the direct way using the public transport to Cortina d’Ampezzo or the longer option to the hut Ra Stua and under Col Rosa to Cortina d’Ampezzo. Today’s destination is a former Olympic city, impressive with its unique location in the middle of famous Dolomite peaks. There are possible alternatives to shorten the longer stage along the way.
- Walking for the day (Option 1): approx. 1.5-2h, ↓460m
- Walking for the day (Option 2): approx. 6-7h, ↑610m ↓1,300m
- Overnight in Cortina d’Ampezzo
Day 5: Circular track or cablecar Faloria
Starting your walk today, you will enjoy the panorama of the giant rocks of the Ampezzo Dolomites reaching into the skies; the Monte Cristallo and the Cristallogruppe, the Tofana and the Fanesgruppe are the leading actors of this spectacle. There are two options for the day: the longer one leads you towards Forcella Faloria, and the shorter one follows the Dolomieu Panoramic Trail. Both of them are heading towards Passo Tre Croci. The descent to Cortina is equal for both routes. If you don‘t want to take the cable car, you can take a nice circular walk around Cortina.
- Walking for the day (Dolomieu-Trail): approx. 3-4h, ↑100m ↓990m
- Walking for the day (Long option): approx. 5h, ↑270m ↓1,150m
- Walking for the day (Cortina circular walk): approx. 4-5h, ↑650m ↓640m
- Overnight in Cortina d’Ampezzo
Day 6: Cortina d’Ampezzo – Rifugio Auronzo hut – Drei Zinnen (Three Peaks) – Drei Zinnen viewpoint
By bus, you get to Auronzo Hut, situated directly below the world-famous rock massif of the Three Peaks, probably the best-known rock formation in the Dolomites. From here, you hike leisurely down the Rienz Valley to the Dreizinnenblick and return by bus to the starting hotel of your hiking tour in Dobbiaco/Villabassa. For the more leisurely, there is the option of walking around the famous Three Peaks and returning by bus from the Rifugio Auronzo to Dobbiaco/Villabassa. (Tickets not included)

Most of the walks are on good well-marked paths. We strongly advise you to follow only marked trails and never try to shorten the way through the unknown and unmarked terrain. When to go
This trip is available between 19 August – 17 September 2023; 15 June – 28 July & 29 August – 22 September 2024, with departures on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday only. Departures on other days are possible for min 5 people on request.
Dolomites’ summers are mild, with average monthly maximum temperatures in July and August rarely much over 25C and averages of around 20C in June and September. The best time to walk in the Dolomites is between mid-June and mid-September as this is when it is most likely to be free of snow, the weather is at its best, the hotels, mountain refuges and restaurants are open, and the ski lifts and public transport services are running. Mid-June to early July is the best time for flower lovers, with the full range of Alpine flowers in bloom. August is a very busy month, and you will be more likely to find a lot of people on the footpaths and around the refugees. Late September is a particularly beautiful time in the Dolomites with the changing colours of the mountain forests and the footpaths all to yourselves. Please note that availability may be limited during big events such as the Dolomites Marathon in the first half of July.
