Overview
A week of self-guided walking in the Visegrád Mountains, the southernmost part of the Inner Western Carpathians. This is a centre-based tour, staying in a four-star hotel with spa facilities in the town of Visegrád, which has a stunning location on a bend on the River Danube, with views across the mountains. This makes for easy transfers to the region’s natural heritage highlights, including Danube–Ipoly National Park, the Visegrád Mountains’ neighbouring Pilis Mountains, and former Spartacus Hunting Trail, now one of the country’s famous hiking routes. This holiday is suitable for solo travellers.
- Danube Bend

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Visegrád
Arrive in Visegrád, a small town just 40km from Budapest, with a stunning location at the famous bend in the River Danube. If time permits, we recommend visiting Fellegvar Citadel, the Royal Palace ruins or the 12th-century Solomon Tower. This is your base for the week, however, so you also have plenty of time to enjoy other features like its thermal spas and riverside attractions.
- Accommodation: Hotel Visegrád or similar in Visegrád
- Meals included: dinner
Day 2: Visegrád Mountains circular trail I 14km
Start your walking tour of the Visegrád Mountains with a circular trail to Őr Hill (525m). The route is moderately challenging, with some ups and downs involved. The walking terrain is through forest landscapes with valleys, meadows and scenic viewpoints.
- Walking for the day: 14km, 4-5h ↑492m ↓492m
- Meals included: breakfast and dinner
Day 3: Visegrád – Dunabogdány – Visegrád I 22km
From the hotel, start a scenic hike along the Danube Bend to the quiet village of Dunabogdány. This village is located on the Szentendre arm of the Danube, at the foot of the Visegrád Mountains. The village is famous for its late Baroque Saint Donat Chapel, and Rococo-style gilded statue of St. John of Nepomuk in the eponymous square. We recommend having lunch at a restaurant on the banks of the Danube before returning to Visegrád along the same trail. If you prefer a shorter walking day, take a local bus (line 880) back (23mins), which runs every hour.
- Walking for the day: 22km, 6-7h ↑297m ↓297m
- Meals included: breakfast and dinner
Day 4: Rám Gorge and Dobogókő Viewpoint I 19km
After breakfast, travel by local bus to the village of Dömös (12mins). Following a circular route, natural highlights along the way include a viewpoint at Dobogókő, the giant rock formation of Vadálló-kövek, known locally as the stone teeth, and Rám Gorge. Due to the elevation gain, this hike is medium difficulty, but the views and the varied rock formations make it one of the most memorable ones in the country. At the end of the hike, you arrive back in Dömös and return to Visegrád by local bus.
- Walking for the day: 19km, 5-6h ↑778m ↓778m
- Meals included: breakfast and dinner
Day 5: Circular walks around Nagymaros I 8-13km
Cross the River Danube to Nagymaros by ferry (runs hourly, 15mins crossing). From here, there are two circular walks to choose from in Danube-Ipoly National Park.
Option 1. St. Mihály saddle loop I 8km
The trail winds through forests, open fields, meadows and small villages. This is a moderately difficult hike with a few metres of altitude gain and some steeper climbs. These efforts are rewarded with a variety of views and comfortable rest areas.
Walking: 8km, 3h ↑365m ↓366m
Option 3. Danube-Ipoly National Park loop walk I 13km
This route offers views of the rolling hills, forests and wildflowers in the area. Highlights along the way include Mount Rigó hegy (303m) and Mount Szent Mihály-hegy (484m) and Julianus lookout tower.
Walking: 13km, 4-5h ↑573m ↓574m
- Meals included: breakfast and dinner
Optional additional day: Pilis Mountains I 13-15km
You are transferred to the village of Pilisszentkereszt (50mins). Today you can choose one of the two optional trails in the Pilis Mountains.
Option 1. Mount Pilis (756m) and Iron Gate Rock I 13km
A not too strenuous walk, but with some steep sections and relatively short. Explore the streams, waterfalls and wildflower meadows of the Pilis Mountains, with a hike to the rock formation known as Iron Gate Rock. Continue to the top, where you get superb, panoramic views. Continue the circular walk to Pilisszentkereszt, where you are met and transferred back to the hotel.
Walking: 13km, 4-5h ↑485m ↓485m
Option 2. Dera Gorge I 15km
A forest hike to Dera Gorge, famous for its steep cliffs and bridges, on the edge of the Pilis and Visegrád Mountains. Some sections of the trail are narrow when you go through the gorge. The walk comes to a close in Pilisszentkereszt, where you are met and transferred you to the hotel.
Walking: 15km, 5-6h ↑360m ↓360m
- Meals included: breakfast and dinner
Day 6: Spartacus Hunting Trail I 20km
One of the most historic trails in the area, following a narrow path overlooked by the peaks of the Visegrád Mountains. It used to be a hunting path, dating back to the 1930s. Today, it’s a celebrated hiking trail, taking you through Apát-kúti Valley, beech forests and with great views of the Danube and surrounding mountains.
