Overview
This is a tour that lets you experience the best Austria has to offer, cycling from Innsbruck to Salzburg, two of its most iconic cities as well as taking you through magnificent alpine landscapes. This cycling tour starts from the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck, taking you through the majestic Zillertal valley to the landmark city of Salzburg, where you will be able to enjoy Austria’s cultural heritage as well as the spectacular Krimml Waterfall. Explore Tyrol’s tradition and Salzburg’s high culture on a cycling adventure to remember!

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Innsbruck
Tour briefing and distribution of the bikes upon arrival. Depending on the timing of your arrival, you can spend the day enjoying the city and its sights: the Bergisel Ski Jump and the Golden Roof.

Day 2: Innsbruck – Strass/Zillertal | 50km
Head to Wattens with the steeply towering North Chain of the Karwendel mountains at your side. Cycle through the saline town of Hall with its historical Mint tower, where you can visit the enchanting Swarovski Crystal Worlds. You then cycle along the Inn cycle path past Schwaz, where there is a silver mine until you get to the village of Strass.

Day 3: Strass – Krimml | 25 – 45km
You cycle along the pleasant Zillertal bike path until you get to Zell or even a bit further through the well-known Mayrhofen. Along the route you have an amazing mountain view of the Zillertal main ridge with its huge peaks towering to more than 3000m high. A bus transfer in the early afternoon takes you over the Gerlospass to Krimml. During the journey, you will be able to admire Europe’s biggest waterfall, which you can also explore closely by foot on a high path later on.

Day 4: Krimml – Kaprun/Zell am See | 60km
Today’s stage runs through the Hohe Tauern national park and Upper Pinzgau, revealing scenic landscapes of snow-topped mountains. With the view alternating between lush green meadows and small villages, today’s cycle offers you truly magical scenery. In Kaprun you can visit the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs.

Day 5: Kaprun/Zell am See – Lofer | 50km
You head to the village of Lofer as you have the option for a detour to Lake Zell, where you can take a refreshing swim. You quickly arrive in Saalfelden via Maria Alm, known for its famous pilgrimage church. This is a great place for you to enjoy lunch. Further highlights on your way to Lofer include the Seisenbergklamm (gorge) and the Lamprechtshöhle (caves) near Weißbach.

Day 6: Lofer – Salzburg | 50km
On your last cycling day, you go through the tranquil Saalach valley and Bad Reichenhall which will enchant you with its Bavarian flair. The cycling route for the day finishes at Salzburg, the hometown of Mozart. The cultural heritage of the city is impressive so make sure you have enough time for a stroll around the old town and a visit of Mozart’s birth house.

Accommodation on this tour includes a mix of small, locally-owned hotels, B&Bs and traditional guesthouses. They have been carefully selected based on a variety of criteria including their location, warm hospitality, fine local food or commitment to responsible tourism. Breakfast buffet is included each day. For lunch and dinner you can enjoy the cosy restaurants along the way.
Difficulty and terrain
The tour route goes along beautiful cycle paths and small side roads in the Inn, Ziller and Salzach valleys. The terrain is slightly hilly in some parts and goes on main roads on very short sections, making the trip suitable even for those new to bike travel (read more about difficulty grades). Upon arrival, you will receive detailed travel information with route maps or overview maps, route description, tourist attractions and important telephone numbers.
When to go
This trip is available from April until October. The weather is best in July – August. Standard departures are possible on Saturdays only. Alternative departures can be organised upon request, as the pricing will depend on the size of the group.

In case you would like to rent a bike from us, we can offer a different variety of bikes. All bikes are equipped with a combination lock, saddle bag (water-repellent), handlebar bag (water-repellent), a pump and service-set with tools with an extra bicycle tube. Sample pictures attached below, note that the exact models may differ depending on the availability, but the standard will be the same.
