Around the Lakes of Carinthia by Bike 1

Around the Lakes of Carinthia by Bike

Overview

This is a leisure bicycle tour taking you to the most beautiful lakes of Carinthia, without any sections with steep slopes or car trafficked paved roads. The stages are deliberately shorter, giving you more time to discover the magnificent landscape, and also take in the local cuisine and culture landmarks. The tour takes you from Villach, the cycling capital of Carinthia, to Lake Millstätter, Lake Weißensee, Lake Pressegger, Lake Faaker and via the valley Keutschacher Seental with its four lakes to the provincial capital of Klagenfurt. From there you pass by Lake Wörthersee, join the Drava/Drau cycle path back to Villach and finally around Lake Ossiacher. Passing by blue and turquoise lakes, accompanied by a beautiful landscape, the route will fascinate you with its variety.

  • Accommodation: Mosser or similar

Day 2: Villach – Lake Millstatt round trip – Millstatt/Seeboden | 30 km

In the morning you take the train to Lendorf near Spittal an der Drau, from where you cycle on secondary roads to Lake Millstatt, which is completely surrounded by a cycle path. You will discover the untouched south shore and enjoy breathtaking views of the lake in many places. Along the northern shore, you cycle to the capital of the region, Millstatt am See. Austrian emperors used to spend their holidays here, and many elegant villas from this era are still preserved.

Day 3: Millstatt/Seeboden – Weißensee – Hermagor/Pressegger See/Tröpolac | 30 km

In the morning, a shuttle bus takes you up to lake Weißensee. Once on the top, you have time to enjoy the impressive natural surroundings of the lake and have a dip. Take the boat to the starting point of the cycling stage in the dreamy Gitschtal valley.

Day 4: Hermagor/Pressegger See/Tröpolac – Gailtal – Faaker See – Mühlbach & Wörthersee | 60-75 km

The tour starts at the Gailtal cycle path, one of Carinthia‘s most scenic cycling routes. It leads through the Schütt nature reserve, formed by a landslide of the imposing Dobratsch mountain, and where the Gail River flows through wide gravel banks. From the Gailtal cycle path, turn off at Müllnern in the direction of Faaker See and continue along the southern shore of the lake.

  • Cycling distance for the day: approx. 60-75 km
  • Accommodation: Rosentaler Hof or similar

Day 5: Mühlbach/Wörthersee/Faakersee – Rosegg – Drauradweg – Klopeiner See | 60-75 km

The day starts with a section along the Drau cycle path and then leads to the Keutschacher Seental cycle path. This tour runs
via Rosegg and through the beautiful Rosental, along the Ferlach reservoir and directly on the Drau and through the unspoilt nature to Lake Klopein, one of the warmest bathing lakes in Carinthia.

  • Cycling distance for the day: approx. 60-75 km
  • Accommodation: Menüwirt or similar

Day 6: Lake Klopeiner See – Völkermarkter Stausee – Grafenstein – Klagenfurt – Pörtschach/Velden | 55-65 km

After breakfast, cycle along the Völkermarkt reservoir and via Grafenstein back towards Klagenfurt. The route then continues along the northern shore of Lake Wörthersee, through the well-known and popular seaside resorts of Pörtschach and Velden. Along this Wörthersee cycle path, small bathing spots invite you to take a refreshing dip in Lake Wörthersee before you reach today’s stage destination on Lake Wörthersee. If you want to spend more time in Klagenfurt, you can also shorten this stage by taking a train ride or one of the Wörthersee boats (tickets are not included).

  • Cycling distance for the day: approx. 55-65 km
  • Accommodation: Buchenhof or similar

Day 7: Wörthersee – Lake Ossiacher – Villach | 50-60 km

The route today goes on bike paths and often along the lake, where you are free to stop for a cooling jump into the water. The bathing resorts along the lake are lively and have nice inviting sea promenades with many attractions for big and small cyclists. Leaving lake Wörthersee in a westerly direction you reach the Drava/Drau cycle path, the most famous bike path in Carinthia, which will bring you back to Villach. The relatively small city of Villach is perfect for a short stroll in the centre.
