Self Guided Walking Holidays in Japan
Our self guided walking holidays in Japan are an amazing way to discover the country. Take the ancient Nakasendo Trail through the central mountains of Japan. Or walk the Kumano Kodo or Shikoku Pilgrim Trails, going from temple to temple and enjoying the stunning scenery,
The Shikoku 88 Pilgrimage connects 88 Buddhist temples and the full walk covers more than a thousand kilometers. For our Shikoku Pilgrim Trail itinerary we have selected the best walks and accommodations, including Shukubo pilgrims lodgings and fine inns in appealing cities, which offer convenient transport to the trailheads.
Our Kumano Kodo Trail itinerary takes in the complete path, focusing on both the Nakahechi-do and Kohechi-do, weaving through forested mountains and small villages first towards the Grand Shrine of Hongu and then onwards to the mountain-top temple complex of Mount Koya.
The Nakasendo Trail, linking Tokyo and Kyoto through the central mountains, will bring you walking along forested paths, between historic Juku post towns and getting a glimpse of what life was like in times gone by. You’ll then travel into the Oku-HIda mountains to explore the biodiversity of Kamikochi before arriving into iconic Takayama.
