It’s time to come out from under those winter duvets, stop dreaming about sunny adventures, and just find one instead. Go a bit mad in March and let yourself go down a rabbit hole exploring the many routes and rides available out there. It’s early enough in the season to get many of the trails to yourselves, it’s not too hot, but spring is definitely knocking at the door. So, if you want to find the best adventure to give yourself a good airing for spring, check out our best cycling holidays in March.
March bike tours in Spain
Spain is big on biking ‘breakaways’ in March, holding its position at the top of the leaderboard for cycling holiday choices. You can see them all here, but here are some of our most popular bike tours in Spain at this time of year, most of which also have e-bike options. So you can keep it mellow in March too.
Ruta del Cister, Catalonia
Catalonia starts to really shine from about March onwards, and the wildflowers wangle their way out of hibernation along its coastal and mountain trails too. Temperatures can get as high as 15C in March, increasing by a couple of degrees every month. One of our March favourites, and worth getting in before the Easter crowds, is cycling on the Ruta del Cister. Take in the region’s monasteries over five days, in a landscape of exquisite and ecclesiastical beauties. This sacred circular route connects the monasteries of Poblet, Vallbona de les Monges and Santes Creus, starting and ending in the medieval landscapes of Espluga de Francolí. With no shortage of vineyards and wine villages en route. This tour is also accessible by train from Barcelona.
Camino Mozárabe and the Alhambra in March
The Camino Mozárabe was a pilgrimage route for Christians heading to Santiago de Compostela from southern Spain. The pilgrimage was undertaken by the Mozarabs who were living in the Muslim territory of Al-Andalus. Although it’s ancient, it’s new to our collection of both walking and cycling holidays, the latter following a section between Granada and Córdoba. Covering 145km over seven days, you not only get to explore these two iconic Spanish cities, but also the Alhambra de Granada, Mosque of Córdoba and La Mota fortress in Alcalá. And in March, we can safely say, you will go in peace. If you get in before Easter that is. Although that’s a time to ring your bicycle bell along with the many church ones.

Mallorca cycling holidays in March
Our road cycling holidays in Mallorca, which are available from the beginning of March, will get your legs and head spinning with the beauty of it all. Mallorca is not only the largest of the Balearics, at 3,640km², it’s also the most mountainous, with the Serra de Tramuntana range creating a strong spine along its north coast. This stretch is just part of the island circuit that you take on, either on our nine day intense cycling tour, with daily distances between 40-118km, or our more relaxed one, where maximum daily distance is 76km. The good news for some is that you can also do these cycling holidays on e-bikes.

Spring cycling holidays on the Camino de Santiago
We know that it’s also in Spain, but we’re listing this separately, because the various Camino de Santiago routes also take you through France and Portugal, depending on your chosen section. Although some of the more elevated routes aren’t available this early in the year, we have plenty of options for cycling the Camino Frances and Camino Portugues. They do get busier at Easter of course, so if you want peace and quiet, go earlier in the month. For more information, see our blog, Cycling the Camino de Santiago.

March cycling trips in the Azores
Cycling holidays in the Azores take you to some of the best spots in this otherworldly archipelago of nine islands, which are part of the Portuguese Republic, albeit 1,500km west of the mainland. On our Faial and Pico cycling holiday, we have an e-bike adventure that takes you to craters, swimming spots and protected forests. Or you can follow our trails around Terceira, which is known as the Lilac Isle, as the volcanic coastline takes on purple shades at sunset. In March there are also plenty of purple periwinkle flowers, pink Azorean bellflowers and Bermuda buttercups coming into bloom, along with many others.
The stars of the show in March in the Azores are blue whales, which hone in on these havens from March to mid-May, but sperm whales are here all year round.

Where to cycle in Italy in March
The best time to go to Italy is often when there are fewer tourists around, but then again many of our adventure holidays take you off the beaten path anyway. March is particularly quiet though in many parts. We have plenty of Italian idylls to be explored by bike during this month, with our standout saddle stars as follows:
Cycling the Amalfi Coast by e-bike
Spring awakens in the most spectacular way along the Amalfi Coast, with temperatures around 16C in March, but you may get rainy evenings. It’s this rain that brings forth the region’s floral fest, however, with wisteria filling the air of Positano and Ravello towards the end of March, and the yellow flowers of broom and sweet-smelling euphorbia covering the clifftops. All of which you can experience on this e-bike holiday on the Amalfi, giving you six days to breathe it all in.
Cycling in Sicily
By March, temperatures are already in the high teens in Sicily, which is perfect for exploring the island’s north-western tip on our cycling holiday. This springtime cycling (almost) circuit starts in Marsala, famous for its wine, and finishes in Trapani, at the foot of Monte Erice, in an idyllic coastal location. Sea temperatures are already around 15-16C in March, so great for cooling off your feet, but you may want to put more neoprene in your pannier if you want to swim properly. You’ll be kept busy, however, exploring Sicily’s glistening salt pans and gorgeous villages, emerald coves and nature reserves, or ancient temples and vineyards. As well as the remote and idyllic island off an island, Isola di Favignana. You can also rent e-bikes on this tour, as if Sicily isn’t sizzling on all cylinders already. Although sizzling a lot less than in summer, for sure.
Cycling in Cilento
If you want to explore Cilento in silentio, then March is pretty dreamy on this coastal part of Italy, with everything from the temples at Paestum to secret coves on the Tyrrhenian Sea on this cycling holiday. Founded in 1991, the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park is actually the second-largest park in Italy but, for many, this part of the Campania region is still pretty unknown. Get ready for coastal paths, traditional towns and villages, ancient chapels and that ever-present coast.

We hope this has given you a few ideas for embracing a few late winter cycling holidays. natural adventures. In addition to the above, there are many other places to go cycling in March, from Liguria to Lake Constance, Turkey to the Great Taste Trail in New Zealand.
