This walking holiday is a luxury version of our Classic Zugspitze CIrcuit with accommodation in exclusive 4-star hotels with spa facilities.

Zugspitze, the highest peak in Germany at 2,962 m, stands mighty on its southern border, commanding views into four different countries. On the Classic Zugspitze Circuit you will start from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and make a full loop around the base of the mountain, following panoramic trails through beautiful scenery and traditional Alpine towns and villages, famous for their exquisite frescoes (Lüftlmalerei).

The walks are easy to moderate, up to five hours per day, the steepest sections being done by car or cable car transfers, so this holiday is appropriate for a wide range of walkers. Enjoy stunning gorges and idyllic alpine pastures and take your time to enjoy a typical Bavarian & Tyrolean hospitality.

Day 1: Arrival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Arrival at Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Day 2: Garmisch – Mittenwald/Klais

The day starts with a wild and idyllic walk through Partnach Gorge, where the waters of Wetterstein massif meet. You continue via soft rolling hills and alpine pastures to Klais or Mittenwald.

Walking for the day: approx. 5 hours, 16 km, ­ ­↑­­­­640m ↓430m

Day 3: Mittenwald/Klais – Leutasch

Precise stone masonry cut the route through the gorge into steep rock walls. Bold wooden footbridges cross the river up to 40 m above the water. Enjoy the contrasting walk along Leutascher Ache river into the valley. Past hamlets and meadows covered in flowers with the backdrop of the Wetterstein massif you walk into the widening Leutasch valley.

Walking for the day: approx. 4 hours, 14 km, ­ ↑­­­­220m 30m

Day 4: Day off or lake walking tour

Today you can choose between relaxing or taking a walk to the lakes in and around Seefeld. You can also reach one of the Seefelder summits, either by walking or taking the cable car. Return to Leutasch by bus.

Walking for the day: approx. 3 hours, 9 km, ­ ↑­­­­300m ↓220m

Day 5: Leutasch – Ehrwald

A short bus ride takes you to Gaistal valley. During the summer you can spot the local Haflinger horses wandering across the fields as well as the brown and grey cattle and Scottish Galloways. You walk along the Ganghofer path through a picturesque scenery and up to the Ehrwalder alpine pasture where Bavarian author Ludwig Ganghofer sought a retreat in the past. Take the cable car down into the valley and continue to Ehrwald.

Walking for the day: approx. 5 hours, 17 km, ­ ↑­­­­440m ↓290m

Day 6: Ehrwald – Garmisch

Step by step you walk up to the foothills of Zugspitze and take in the famous Eibsee scenic view. The tour ends on the banks of the lovely lake Eibsee with full view of the magnificent Zugspitze-Garmisch panorama. Take the Zugspitze train back to Garmisch.

Garmisch: Staudacherhof 4*

It is a family-run traditional hotel located in a central yet quiet location in the heart of the Alpine town of Garmisch. At the start and the end of your hiking holiday you get to enjoy two relaxing nights in the comfortable rooms with Alpine decor. There are plenty of facilities to relax such as the in-house charming spa area with indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steam room and many more. The restaurant serves Bavarian and international specialities.

Mittenwald: Hotel Post 4*

Hotel Post is located In the well-known holiday resort of Mittenwald, situated directly in the Karwendel Mountains and lovingly designed in the building of the former postal station. In the typical Bavarian public rooms and the quaint beer garden regional cuisine and cool beer is served. Charming modern rooms and a pool provide the necessary relaxation.

Leutasch: Biohotel Leutascher Hof 4*

Biohotel Leutascher Hof offers pure quietness and relaxation, surrounded by a unique mountain world, which you get to marvel at from the sun-lounger after the hiking tour. Additionally there is the spa area with a sauna, a so-called ‚Brechlbad’ (herbal steam room) and a ‚Kraxnofen’ (Carinthian haybath oven). For breakfast and dinner an elaborate cuisine awaits with freshly sourced local produce.

Ehrwald: Hotel Sonnenspitze 4*

Enjoy life on the sun-terrace with a view onto the impressive Zugspitz-massif, in the small but nice spa area with sauna and steam room and in the comfortable rooms with regional interior. The cosy restaurant serves regional Tyrolean and Austrian cuisine.

Note that hotels are subject to availability. In case a particular hotel (from the ones pictured above) is fully booked for your desired dates, we will replace it with a hotel of equal or higher value and quality level. We will provide exact accommodation details to you upon booking confirmation.

Meals

Breakfast buffet is included. When no restaurant is available on the route, lunches and snacks can either be bought from local shops, or packed lunch can be pre-ordered from your hotel the night before. Dinner is available either from the restaurant in your accommodation or the restaurants in the town where you stay for overnight.

By Train

There are good train connections from Munich. Once you arrive at Garmisch-Partenkirchen train station, you can reach your starting hotel by a short walk or a bus ride.

By Plane

Our recommended arrival/departure airport for this holiday is either Munich or Innsbruck.


By Car

Limited free parking is available at the starting hotel. Public parking garage costs approx. EUR 20 per week. No reservation possible.

German belongs to the Germanic group of languages. In bigger towns, you will have no problems finding English speaking service in the hotels or restaurants. However, we suggest carrying a dictionary or a phrase book with you. Please be aware that only a few restaurants offer multi-lingual menus.

Difficulty Grade: Easy to Moderate

The walking sections require basic fitness level. You will walk on well maintained walking trails and partly on forest paths. The steeper sections are negotiated mostly by transfers or cable car. Daily walking times are not more than 5 hours (read more about difficulty grades).

When to Go

This trip is available from the end of May until mid-October, departures on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only.

Weather

The climate in the region is continental, cold and temperate. Depending on location and altitude, temperatures vary, but, in the June-September period, the daily averages are 15 – 25C. Spring and autumn are cooler with occasional rain. Expect the weather to change rapidly during the day.
