Faroe Islands Walking Holiday

Faroe Islands Drive & Hike

Overview

The Faroe archipelago comprises 18 volcanic islands, occupying a patch of the Norwegian Sea halfway between Scotland and Iceland. They are a place to fully immerse yourself in nature and take in awe-inspiring landscapes and seascapes. Feel the wind in your hair, see colourful villages, grazing sheep, green mountains, mysterious fog and the nearby islands, which rise majestically on the horizon. The itinerary includes a hike to Slættaratindur, the archipelago’s highest peak (882m).

During the walks on this itinerary, you will be led by an experienced local guide and will have the opportunity to explore the archipelago on your own by car. Please note that local authorities have recently implemented tight restrictions regarding access to the hiking areas and on most trails, it is now mandatory to be accompanied by a local guide.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to the Faroe Islands. Visit Gásadalur

Arrival with Atlantic Airways. Pick up the rental car at the airport. Take the short drive to the village of Gásadalur, which was the last village connected to the rest of the islands by a tunnel. Enjoy the quiet and stunning view of Tindhólm. Spend the night on Vágar.

Day 2: The bird island Mykines

The tour starts with a grand boat trip by majestic sea cliffs. Spot puffins, that charming little bird with a colourful beak, or the impressive gannet, which can only breed on the isolated isle to the west of the main island. Upon arrival to the island, you meet the guide and start the walk. Return and spend the night in Klaksvík.

  • Walking for the day: 3 hours, 7-8 km
  • Accommodation: Hotel Klaksvík or similar

Day 3: Svínoy guided hike

Take the ferry from Viðoy to Svínoy. Today’s beautiful hike starts in the village and we walk out to the headland called Dragin, where the British used to have an outpost during WW2. There is also a bird fowling seat at Dragin. Among the birds, it is expected to see or hear whimbrels, European golden plovers, arctic skuas, arctic terns, common eiders, meadow pipits, greylags, and several species of gulls. Spend the night in Klaksvík.

  • Walking for the day: 4 hours, 5 km
  • Accommodation: Hotel Klaksvík or similar

Day 4: Kallin lighthouse

Take the ferry from Klaksvík to the island of Kalsoy. In the village of Trøllanes, you meet the local guide at the bus stop. The guide will walk with you to Kallin. After approximately an hour’s walk, you will get to the lighthouse and be rewarded by an unforgettable panoramic view. Spend the night in Eysturoy.

  • Walking for the day: 3-4 hours, 10 km
  • Accommodation: Gjáargarður or similar

Day 5: The highest mountain in the Faroe Islands – Slættaratindur

Slættaratindur (882m) is a must-do hike, as it is the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands. The walk starts from the mountain pass of Eiðisskarð. When you reach the top, the view of the entire archipelago is nothing less than spectacular. Spend the night in Eysturoy.

  • Walking for the day: 3-4 hours, 6 km
  • Accommodation: Gjáargarður or similar

Day 6: Hike from Tjørnuvík to Saksun

Drive to Saksun and park the car. At the agreed time and place, a transfer car takes you from Saksun to Tjørnuvík. Tjørnuvík is surrounded by steep mountains and offers a fantastic view of the impressive rock formations, the Giant and the Witch. During the hike, you will enjoy the panorama of Slættaratindur and Gráfelli, the two highest mountains in the Faroe Islands. From Tjørnuvíksskarð and down to the village Saksun you get a fantastic view of the beautiful lagoon surrounded by sand in the fjord. Spend the night in Tórshavn.

  • Walking for the day: 5 hours, 7 km
  • Accommodation: Hotel Streym or similar

Day 7: Kirkjubøur hike or Vestmanna Cliffs boat tour

Hike over the mountain and back to the cultural centre of Kirkjubøur. Enjoy the majestic view over the islands of Sandoy, Hestur, Koltur, and Vágar. After arriving in Kirkjubøur, it is possible to visit Roykstovan that is approximately 900 years old. See the ruins of the Saint Magnus Cathedral and Ólavs’ church from the year 1111. If you prefer to take a rest from walking today, you can alternatively take a boat tour to Vestmanna Cliffs with lunch and visit the Saga Museum. Spend the night in Tórshavn.

  • Walking for the day: 4-5 hours, 14 km
  • Accommodation: Hotel Streym or similar

Day 8: Departure
